Pick a Middle School…Any Middle School

Wood Middle School

We here in Alameda have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to middle schools. It’s wonderful to have so many options, but the process of choosing the “right” school can be overwhelming.

Of course, there’s no “right” school, and there’s no right way to pick that school. Ultimately, your criteria will reflect the needs of your child and your family, whether those include support for learning disabilities, electives, location, or where your child’s friends are going. For some parents and students, after-school sports make the difference. For others it’s an advanced math curriculum or foreign language instruction.

PBS Parents has a fantastic article about what questions to ask and what to look for to make sure the school is a good fit for you and your child.

This Thursday, January 19, Franklin alumni parent Jill Gorman will be hosting “Making the Middle School Decision,” a panel discussion about choosing and transitioning to middle school. The program is specifically focused on the needs and questions of families or children with special needs, but all are welcome to attend. The event is at Franklin at 6:30 p.m. Childcare will be provided.
