This program rewards students for reading while raising money for a charitable organization. For 6 weeks in the spring, Franklin students set reading goals, and read for sponsorship to "buy" animals for the Heifer Project International. Heifer Project is a non-profit organization committed to ending world hunger and poverty through the purchase of animals for needy families. By incorporating our school-wide reading program into Read-to-Feed we get the opportunity to support our children in reading and becoming responsible world citizens.
Start date : Monday February 6th
End date : Friday March 30th
Our popular reading program, Read to Feed, will begin Monday February 6thand run through Friday March 30th. Here’s how it works:
Teachers will give each student a reading goal. Students should read daily and record their reading on log sheets. They are also encouraged to ask family and friends to sponsor them in their reading, and try to reach their goals. At the end of the 8-week period, students can collect any sponsorship money and turn it in to their teachers. Last year we collected $2,450!! The students who reached their reading goals were honored at morning assemblies. This program benefits Heifer International, a global charity that helps people in poor and developing countries not only earn enough to feed their families, but trains them to pass on the gift, thereby helping entire communities with the donation of a cow, flock of ducks, pig, llama, etc. This is a wonderful opportunity for Franklin students to learn about sharing what they have with others.
